Company Culture And Employee Motivation - 2002 Words

There has been a change in company culture since the 1930’s due to the rise of service industries and the steady decline of manufacturing. The†¦show more content†¦There is a hierarchy of authority and leadership as well as a strong chain of command. The leadership style is therefore very authoritative and task oriented. The communication runs from the top down and the workers at the operational level have no power in comparison to top level management and CEO’s. This works well in manufacturing companies because it is a relatively stable industry and is suited to this rational and task oriented approach. The aim of the rational goal model is to maximize output and key writers on this include Smith, Frederick and Ford. The philosophy of Adam Smith revolved around managers finding the optimal use of resources within organisations, with no regard for the well- being of the worker. He advocated the division of labour to increase productivity and wrote about this in his 1776 book ‘The Wealth of Nations’ where he used a Pin Factory as a model to illustrate the benefits of labour division. He proved that when manufacturing is divided into a series of small tasks, such that each individual performs the same task over and over again, the production line moves much quicker. This promotes efficiency in the use of resources. However, he also discovered through this example that this type of repetitive work has negative effect of workers intellect, happiness and motivation.
